One June in 2003 or 2004, four hundred balloons are waiting in the Libellules courtyard, one per student; there’s something for everyone—all black, all blue, all yellow, all blellow—and there are even some with eyes, those googly eyes you stick everywhere, with the pupils that dance around every time they move. In the courtyard, hands are raising, feet are stomping; impatience makes a noise.

Everyone wait for the signal, the fluorescent red stick that lets out its SQUEAK and its glitter—it’s going to go off, one, two—and me in my room I hurry, A button I jump, B button I throw my eggs, there’s something for everyone, all black, all blue, all yellow, all blellow, Yoshi sprints, Mom yells, hurry up or we’ll miss the balloons, we won’t miss a thing, I tell myself, final jump and the level ends, I let the image sizzle on the screen, I run, race down the stairs, devour the stairs, open the door, gaze at the sky.
One June in 2003 or 2004, four hundred balloons float from Geneva to the Moon.
